Live views from the International Space Station are streaming from an external camera mounted on the station's Harmony module. The camera is looking forward at an angle so that International Docking Adapter 2 is visible. If the Harmony module camera is not available due to operational considerations for a longer period of time, a continuous loop of recorded Earth views will be displayed with the caption “Previously Recorded.” The space station orbits Earth about 250 miles (425 kilometers) above the surface. An international partnership of five space agencies from 15 countries operates the station, and it has been continuously occupied since November 2000. It's a microgravity laboratory where science, research, and human innovation make way for new technologies and research breakthroughs not possible on Earth. More: 🤍 Did you know you can spot the station without a telescope? It looks like a fast-moving star, but you have to know when to look up. This is an ISS live earth view happening right now from space at the International Space Station. The International Space Station is 260 miles (420 km) above the planet in a low earth orbit. It takes 90 minutes for the ISS to complete one orbit around the earth. During that time it passes into the dark side of the earth for 1/2 the time. During the dark period, you'll be able to view lightning storms and the light from towns and cities. Regularly, the ISS will stop transmitting due to a connection loss but will come back up automatically once it establishes the connection again. The picture will switch to simulation of where the ISS is above earth when the connection is lost (aka OFFLINE). This livestream is part of something bigger. AfarTV has an idea that can help us take better care of our planet. Read about it here: 🤍 Want a different view? The overview camera livestream from the ISS can be found here: 🤍 There are 16 sunrises and sunsets every day. Check them out! The dashboard on the bottom contains the following information: 1. BOTTOM, FAR LEFT BOX Global flight path of the ISS with real-time lightning strikes. The flight path of the ISS shows where the ISS is right now, its path 90 minutes ago (yellow line), and 90 minutes ahead (white line). Due to the Station's orbit, it appears to travel from west to east over our planet, and due to Earth's own rotation, the Space Station moves 2200 km to the west on each orbit. If you time it right, you can see the International Space Station on a clear night with your own eyes, just by looking up. Any lightning that strikes the ground will appear on this map in real-time. This is useful for seeing if the ISS will be passing over any lightning storms while on the night side of earth. 2. BOTTOM, LEFT OF CENTER BOX A zoomed-in map showing the current location of the ISS and current cloud conditions. 3. BOTTOM, CENTER BOX - The space station's current position over the earth (state/province and country) or the name of the body of water, the current time and date, the elevation and speed of the station, and the condition of the video transmission: Live Now (red box) or Offline (blue box). if the live transmission is offline, archived video or a simulation of where the space station is will appear in the main window. Additional data related to the country below will be displayed in this area - including, capital city, population statistics, age demographics, energy sources etc. Data source: 🤍 4. BOTTOM, RIGHT BOX - If the live stream is running and it is daytime, this box will show the secondary camera aboard the ISS. The camera will either be a wide-angle view of earth and space with parts of the space station in the foreground or it will show the astronauts working inside of the space station. At night, the view of earth from the sunny side of the planet captured 46 minutes ago is shown. When the live feed is offline, Solar flares, solar storms, and sunspots can be spotted from the latest time-lapse videos of the surface of our sun. These images are captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and are updated every hour. Note: Due to the delay in getting the camera feeds, the camera feeds and the maps might be out of sync by up to 15 seconds. This is an ISS live space view from the NASA External HD live cameras currently mounted on the outside of the ISS. Thank you 🤍 for providing this stream! Watch live with us as a “ring of fire” eclipse travels across the United States on Oct. 14, 2023, from Oregon to Texas. This event occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun, but appears too small to completely cover the Sun’s surface – resulting in what appears as a ring of fire in the sky. It’s also known as an annular solar eclipse. Everyone in the contiguous 48 states will have the opportunity to see at least a partial eclipse. Join us for conversations with scientists and telescope views from across the country — and send us your questions in chat using #askNASA. ✨ Webb Makes First Detection of Crucial Carbon Molecule A team of international scientists has used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to detect a new carbon compound in space for the first time. Known as methyl cation (pronounced cat-eye-on) (CH3+), the molecule is important because it aids the formation of more complex carbon-based molecules. Methyl cation was detected in a young star system, with a protoplanetary disk, known as d203-506, which is located about 1,350 light-years away in the Orion Nebula. Carbon compounds form the foundations of all known life, and as such are particularly interesting to scientists working to understand both how life developed on Earth, and how it could potentially develop elsewhere in our universe. The study of interstellar organic (carbon-containing) chemistry, which Webb is opening in new ways, is an area of keen fascination to many astronomers. Train today, perform tomorrow. ⁣ ⁣ On September 20, 2023 the Artemis II astronauts practiced some of the pre-launch procedures they’ll perfect before their slated 2024 launch to the Moon.⁣ ⁣ NASA Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen awoke at their crew quarters at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and put on test versions of the Orion Crew Survival System spacesuits they will wear on launch day. They then departed to Launch Pad 39B in NASA’s new crew transportation fleet. ⁣ ⁣ Upon arrival at the pad, the crew headed onto the mobile launcher and proceeded up the tower to the white room inside the crew access arm. There was no Orion spacecraft or Space Launch System rocket on the pad today, but on launch day this is where the crew will take their final Earth-bound steps prior to their journey around the Moon. ⁣ ⁣ Credit: NASA⁣

Watch a spacecraft deliver an asteroid sample to Earth! Our OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer) spacecraft is approaching Earth, and on Sept. 24, 2023, it will release its sample return capsule into the atmosphere on a path to land at the Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range. The touchdown will mark the end of a seven-year journey to explore asteroid Bennu, collect a sample from its surface, and deliver it to Earth as the U.S’s first pristine asteroid sample. Scientists around the world will study the sample over the coming decades to learn about how our planet and solar system formed, as well as the origin of organics that may have led to life on Earth.
